The Broadening Excellence in Economics (BEE) initiative includes a two-week Research Training Program that takes place at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The BEE initiative is a collaboration with the University of Minnesota to broaden opportunities for undergraduate students to access training and advanced research in economics. The initiative encompasses a new series of intermediate level courses at the U of M, Economics at Work, as well as a practical Research Training Program at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.
What is Broadening Excellence in Economics’ Research Training Program?

The requirements to participate in the program are:
- Enrollment, participation, and grade in Economics at Work: The Wealth of African Nations Course at the University of Minnesota for spring 2026
- An overall grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher
- Timely completion of the 2026 program application
What are the eligibility requirements to participate in the program?

You can apply for the BEE program via the registration link found on the website. You will also be asked to provide a transcript (official or unofficial), a CV, and a statement of interest. The statement should address why you are applying for the Research Training Program, what you are hoping to get out of the program and how you think participating will help you fulfill your future goals (no more than 500 words).

A total of 12 students will be accepted into the 2026 program.
How many students are accepted into the BEE program?

We will inform all candidates of their acceptance status in late March.

The stipend is a lump-sum payment for participants in the program.
What is the stipend?

If you are in the U.S. on a visa and have questions about the conditions of your status or ability to receive the stipend, please reach out to the University of Minnesota’s International Student and Scholar Services office prior to start of the 2026 program.
How do I assess my eligibility to receive the stipend?

Each student’s required documentation may vary. We will work with you to determine which documents will be needed for your situation.
What documents/requirements will I need to register to receive my stipend?

Typically, stipends will be paid within 45 days after the conclusion of the two-week program.
How soon can I expect to receive my stipend?

Prior to the start of the program, you will receive an email one month out, two weeks out, and one week out with a checklist of items to prepare for successful participation in the 2026 Research Training Program.
Is there anything I need to prepare before coming?

Housing and transportation will not be provided. We encourage accepted students to plan for housing and transportation needs in advance.
Will housing or transportation be provided?

Parking on-site at the Federal Reserve Bank will not be provided, but we will share information about recommended parking locations near the Bank beforehand.
