Brian Weeden, chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and president of the tribe’s gaming authority, has committed his life to public service, serving both his surrounding community and tribal community since his youth. He has served as a delegate, representative, trustee, and advisor to various national organizations and events including United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY), the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), the Tribal Leaders Summit, and more.
In May 2021, Weeden was the youngest person to be elected as chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. In this role, he has worked to foster stability and transparency in the tribal government while building cooperative relationships at the local, state, and federal levels. Chairman Weeden led the tribe’s efforts to secure its reservation lands through issuance of a new Record of Decision by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Chairman Weeden currently serves on the board of directors of the United South and Eastern Tribes and the Town of Mashpee School Committee, and he is the first vice president of NCAI in addition to his service to other organizations. His priorities include economic development, land conservancy and water protection, youth engagement, cultural protection and awareness, and other issues. He is the recipient of a 40 Under 40 Award from the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development, was named UNITY Alumni of the Year in 2022, and received the 2016 Osamequen Award for his dedication to preserving the tribe, culture, and history of the people. He has completed tribal leadership programs at Harvard Business School and Dartmouth College.
