Seventeen years after easily passing a referendum to build the Fargodome, residents of Fargo resoundingly defeated a proposal to extend local sales taxes to pay for a new $40 million sports and entertainment arena dubbed the Renaissance Center.
The measure would have temporarily increased local sales tax by one-half of a percent to pay for the arena. The proposal needed to garner a 60 percent approval to move forward. Instead, it was defeated by a margin of 71 percent to 29 percent, according to local reports.
