Based on North Dakota State University research expenditures of more than $100 million in fiscal year 2004, the school could find itself among the top 20 percent of research universities in the country, based on the National Science Foundation's annual listing of research expenditures.
Annual research expenditures, including multiyear research awards, cover personnel, equipment and supply costs. NDSU received a record $75.3 million in external grants, contracts and cooperative agreements in fiscal year 2004, as well as $13.7 million in federal formula funds.
Among the 2004 NDSU projects were the inauguration of a mobile laboratory to combat bioterrorism and naturally occurring diseases in livestock, and an expansion of the telepharmacy program to 25 locations. In addition, a grant was received to establish a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence for visual neuroscience, and the NDSU Research Foundation received a patent for a sugar sensor.
Fiscal 2002 data, the most recent available, placed NDSU 126th among the top 610 university and other research centers in the nation.
