Foundation, tribes create charitable fund

A foundation and three American Indian tribes in Minnesota have joined forces to create a new charitable fund called the Minnesota Tribal Government Foundation (MTGF). The Minnesota Community Foundation, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and Prairie Island Indian Community jointly established the fund to support rural economic development on and around tribal lands. According to a spokesperson, the three tribes sought the partnership in order to pair the Indian community's tradition of generosity with the foundation's philanthropic expertise.

The MTGF awarded its first-ever grant to the Family Advocacy Center of Northern Minnesota, which is located in the city of Bemidji. The $100,000 grant will assist victims of crimes in northern Minnesota.
