Minnesota Percent Change in Population 1990—2000

The state saw its highest population increase (532,000) in any single decennial headcount in its history. Its growth rate of more than 12 percent was the highest growth of any Midwest state. Most of the growth was concentrated in metropolitan areas, which grew at 15 percent, more than twice as fast as the growth of nonmetro areas, at 6.7 percent.

However, many fewer counties lost population in the 1990s (25) than in the previous decade (49). The counties that lost population in the last decade were in the western and southern areas of the state.
