Profile: William Poole

William Poole is the newest Federal Reserve bank president, appointed as the 11th chief executive of the St. Louis Fed in March of last year. Prior to assuming his current position, Poole was the Herbert H. Goldberger Professor of Economics at Brown University, Providence, R. I., whose faculty he joined in 1974.

Poole is no stranger to the Federal Reserve System. He began his career at the Board of Governors in 1964 and was a senior economist from 1969 to 1974. Poole has also been an adviser and consultant to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. He also was a visiting economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Born in Wilmington, Del., Poole spent his youth in that city. He received a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College, and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago. Swarthmore honored him with a doctor of laws in 1989.

Poole is a director of United Way of Greater St. Louis and a member of the St. Louis Regional Report Card Steering Committee, a civic improvement organization.

The Eighth Federal Reserve district includes: the state of Arkansas, 44 counties in southern Illinois, 24 counties in southern Indiana, 64 counties in western Kentucky, 39 counties in northern Mississippi, 21 counties in western Tennessee and 71 counties in central and eastern Missouri and the city of St. Louis. This expansive district is served by St. Louis Fed branch offices in Little Rock, Ark., Louisville, Ky., and Memphis, Tenn.
